Who is the next Pope?

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the Vatican entered a period known as Sede Vacante (the vacant seat), during which the College of Cardinals temporarily governs the Church.

The new pope is Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, an American cleric. His election marks the first time a pope has been chosen from the United States.

The papal conclave, consisting of 133 cardinal electors, gathered in the Sistine Chapel on May 7, 2025, and after several rounds of voting, selected Prevost as the successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025.

Prevost has a background in missionary work, particularly in Peru, and has emphasized themes of dialogue, peace, and inclusivity in his first public statements as pope.
