IMF loan to Pakistan

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a financial assistance package for Pakistan, including:

  • $1 billion under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF)
  • $1.4 billion under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF)

This brings total disbursements under the EFF arrangement to $2.1 billion. The RSF is intended to help Pakistan address climate-related vulnerabilities.

However, the loan has faced criticism, particularly from India, which abstained from voting on the approval. Indian officials expressed concerns that Pakistan has a history of economic mismanagement and that funds could be misused for activities undermining regional stability. India has also pointed out that Pakistan has entered 28 IMF programs in the past 35 years, with little structural reform or lasting economic stability.
