Book Review - Getting to Know about a Book - How I TAUGHT my GRANDMOTHER to READ and other stories

I strongly recommend this book for children and adults. This is one of the best books of Sudha Murthy. It talks about life morals that people at any age should know. Everything she learnt from many people whom she met in life was included.

When someone like Mrs. Sudha Murthy decides to write short stories that are semi autobiographical I nature they are bound to take readers on a journey of living and wisdom. This book contains 25 beautiful stories that are packed with values from the past. Many of the stories are from the author’s own life experiences but there are also some from popular folk tales. Many of the stories are simple and touching. ―How I taught my grandmother to read‖ is a very touching story and is about grandmother’s journey t become a literate. Born during the days in India when women rare-ly had a a chance to d anything beyond taking care of their family.

Kristakka Avva, the author’s grand mother was no different . During her time, a popular novel called ―"Kasi Yatre" was appearing in a Kannada weekly. Karmaveera and her grandmother used to make her read for her. After some days the grand daughter had to attend a marriage and there was no one to read for her. By the time grand daughter returned she decides to learn to read by herself and she did it with the help of a little girl. Inspiration can come at any age and from anywhere. This story brings the message n a very light way. It is also a debate of where nature stops and culture takes over. Mrs. Murthy teaches engineering college students and once made her students debate on this topic. She took this opportunity to tell the students a story from mythology with a clear and simple message. It is not about who is superior or inferior, it is about balance and compromise. It is very tough to find a light read that is heavy in wisdom. This book manages to just do that.
